The First Shenzhen International Low-Carbon City Forum was opened in Shenzhen International Low-Carbon City on June 17, 2013, as a key event of the National Low-Carbon Day activities.
This session of the forum was themed on "Low-Carbon Development - Explore Pathways to New Urbanization". Senior officials attending the forum included Xie Zhenhua, then Vice Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and Special Representative on Climate Change Affairs of China, Qiu Baoxing, former Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Wang Rong, Chairman of Guangdong Committee of CPPCC and then Secretary of Shenzhen Committee of CPC, Hugo Brouwer, Director General, Climate Change Department, NDRC, Su Wei, Head of Climate Change Adaptation Division of NDRC, Alastair Morgan, then British Consul-General in Guangzhou, Rebecca Needham, then New Zealand Consul-General in Guangzhou, and Wade Crowfoot, Deputy Director, Governor’s office of Planning and Research.
1,438 experts and representatives from government agencies, international organizations, representative offices in China, domestic and foreign scientific research institutions and enterprises from 16 countries and territories, including the United States, Britain, France, Netherlands and New Zealand, attended the forum. More than 90 scholars, experts and entrepreneurs renowned in China and overseas made wonderful speeches on low-carbon planning, low-carbon transportation, green buildings, clean energy, low-carbon industry, carbon trading and so on at the forum. 43 leading enterprises in the green and low-carbon areas participated in the low-carbon technology and new products exhibition, and signed more than 10 cooperation agreements with Chinese and foreign governmental departments. Activities at the forum were covered by more than 70 domestic and foreign media organizations, including CCTV, Xinhua News Agency and People's Daily, and other national, provincial and municipal media as well as BBC, Reuters and other foreign media.
This forum consisted of sub-forums, the launching ceremony of pilot carbon emissions trading, exhibitions, a creative competition, and signing ceremonies for major international cooperation projects. The forum discussed the pathways and direction of China's sustainable development comprehensively and in-depth in the global context through topics of low-carbon city development modes and pathways, urban planning and development, low-carbon and smart transportation, clean energy development and application, green buildings and green eco-city, future of low-carbon industry and development of carbon emissions trading mechanisms, and so on.
